Sight Word Games to Play at Home
Word Slap
Directions: Spread out the words sent home face up. Have a strong reader in the family call out one of the words. The child slaps the word when they see it, and gets to keep the card.
For other Sight Word Games: Visit this blog by a parent http://www.thejennyevolution.com/fun-ways-practice-sight-words/ (Disclaimer: I do not support or endorse any other content on this blog spare the innovative sight word practice tips. All ideas on Jenny Evolution are those of the author.)
Remember parents: Sight words are to be practiced every night- mastery is our goal!
My Goal: Becoming a Teacher that Reads!
As I began this new year, I came to a moment of hard reflection: I am a reading specialist and I am not reading for enjoyment as much as one would expect for a literacy expert to read. I found that I was constantly encouraging my students to choose a book and read for the fun of it, but I haven’t been doing that. I can hardly remember the last time I picked up a book that wasn’t assigned in a professional learning or being used to help plan instruction. So, I decided that as literacy coach and lifetime learner, it was time to not only "talk the talk" about independent reading, but also to walk the walk.
This year, I will be reading one young adult novel a month. I will then blog about the book that I have read, sharing my thoughts about the book, and how I would use the book instructionally. I am excited about this adventure, and I encourage you to join me! At the end of each post, which can be found under “Literacy in Action”, I will write the name of the book I will be reading next. Will you take my 12 books in a year reading challenge? Let me know by commenting on one of my posts.
News you can use!
Did you know that the Howard County Public Library offers a program that will match students to books based on their age and interests? It is called Beanstack. Sign up your child here.
